'Watching the Grass Grow' Is Not Fun
And now Words and Their Stories from VOA Learning English. Springtime is a time of renewal and growth. Many plants end their long winter sleep and form new buds and shoots. Beautiful flowers will soon be showing their bright colors. And the grass will grow thicker and greener again. Some flowers bloom in a very noticeable way but that is not the case with grass. Imagine you are sitting in a grassy field. And you have only one job – to watch the grass grow. That does not sound very interesting. In fact, it sounds really boring. That idea is what gives us the expression “like watching grass grow.” We use this expression to describe an experience that is uninteresting. Another good word to describe it is tedious. We use this expression in many situations. Let’s hear a few examples: After the politician won his campaign, he gave a two-hour long acceptance speech. Two hours! It was as much fun as watching grass grow. I really don’t like watching long sports games. It’s like watching grass grow. Now, grass grows on the ground all the time. And usually, we don’t give it much thought. If you stand in one place for a long time, the grass will continue to grow under your feet. For people who are always active, always moving, always on-the-go, we can say they don't let grass grow under their feet. We can also say beneath their feet. And sometimes we use this expression as a command. Let’s hear some examples: Don’t let the grass grow beneath your feet. Get back to work. She certainly doesn’t let the grass grow under her feet. She’s been traveling non-stop for over a year. And that’s all the time we have for this Words and Their Stories. Until next time, I’m Anna Matteo.

American Inventors: Rocket Scientist Robert Goddard
Today rocket launches and space missions are common. But in the early 1900s, space travel seemed like a dream. One of the most influential people in the field of rocket science was American Robert Goddard. The American space agency NASA describes Goddard as “the father of modern rocket propulsion.” Robert Goddard once said that "the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow." His scientific work gave hope to many dreams about space travel. He turned some of those dreams into reality. More than one hundred years ago, Goddard carried out studies and tests of rocket engines. He developed and flew many rockets that got their power from solid fuels: chemicals that formed a hard substance. In 1925, he made and tested the first rocket engine using a soft chemical fuel. The next year, he successfully launched the world's first liquid-fuel rocket. Many historians consider liquid-fuel rocket flight to be as important as the first airplane flight by the American brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright. Goddard's work proved that machines could travel outside of Earth's atmosphere and into space. During his early research, he received money and support from the U.S. Smithsonian Institution. The Smithsonian published several reports about his efforts. One publication, called “A Method of Reaching Extreme Altitudes,” wrote about his search for ways to send weather recording instruments higher than balloons could fly. It described how he developed the mathematical theories for rocket flight. In that report, Goddard also suggested the possibility of a rocket someday reaching the moon. At the time, there was a big dispute in the press about this claim. Many people thought he was foolish for suggesting something that seemed so impossible. Many of Goddard’s ideas are still used in rocket development. So, in a way, every rocket that flies today could be considered a Goddard rocket.

Beach, Coast, Shore
This week on Ask a Teacher, we answer a question from Doyeon in Korea about the usage of three similar words. Here is the question: Hello. I want to know the differences between the beach, . . . coast and shore. Thank you. You ask a useful question, Doyeon. Beach, shore and coast are related words, but they have some important differences. Beach The word “beach” is the most specific of the three words. The Collins online dictionary defines beach as “a nearly level stretch of pebbles and sand beside a sea, lake, etc., often washed by high water.” Ocean beaches are popular places to visit. We often use the phrase “at the beach” to express the idea of spending time in the general area of the beach, as in the following example: They will vacation at the beach this summer. We usually say “on the beach” when describing specific activities we do there: She went for a walk on the beach. They are playing football on the beach. Coast The Learning English Word Book defines coast as “land on the edge of the ocean.” We can use the word to describe a wide area, however. For example, Baltimore, Maryland is an East Coast city even though it is several kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean. Here are more examples of how we can use “coast” in a sentence. The Florida coast has many nice towns and beaches. The coast of California extends over 1,300 kilometers. Like the expression “at the beach,” we can say “on the coast” when describing the general area, as in the following example: Her mother has lived on the coast for 30 years. We can use the expression “off the coast of” to describe an area of ocean or sea relative to a place on land: The island is about 60 kilometers off the coast of Africa. Shore The Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines the word “shore” as “the land bordering a usually large body of water.” Shore can sometimes mean the beach, but not always. For example, you might swim to shore and come out of the water onto a beach. But you could also come to shore at a port with no beach in sight. And we can use “shore” when discussing the general area, just like we do with the word “coast.” The following example shows this meaning: The northern shore has many nice towns and beaches.

The Importance of Being ‘Dialed In’
And now, Words and Their Stories, from VOA Learning English. Technology is always progressing. Today, many modern devices can be controlled by touch or voice. This has led to some traditional electronic controls – such as dials and switches – being replaced with new technologies. Digital displays have also become increasingly common. For example, digital number readouts have long replaced the hands on many clocks. Many other devices also now operate purely with digital tools instead of mechanical systems. But some expressions and idioms used by English speakers still describe older technologies. First, let’s talk about dials. These controls are used for changing settings on a piece of equipment, like a radio or old television. We use the dial to tune in to a specific channel. That’s where the expressions dialed in and tuned in come from. If we are dialed in or tuned in to a radio or television program, we can hear it clearly. There is no noise or static. The same can be said when using these terms in personal conversations. For example, if you are dialed in to a project or problem, you know exactly what needs to be done. You are thinking clearly about it and remain very focused. And when you are tuned in, you understand clearly what is going on around you. “Don’t touch that dial” and “stay tuned” are two ways to tell someone to keep watching or listening to a program. Now, let’s talk about switches. These are built to either be off or on. There are no in-between settings like with a dial. So, when we flip the switch, we make something happen quickly and easily. It can also mean that we suddenly change something. Let’s listen to an example. The restaurant’s change to all organic food happened slowly over time. It wasn’t a matter of flipping a switch. Now, for our last expression -- to move the needle. Needles on measuring devices like a scale move to show a desired level has been reached. So, when something moves the needle, it causes a noticeable change in something, usually for the good. And that’s all the time we have for this Words and Their Stories. Don't forget to tune in again for another story about American English expressions. Until next time, I’m Anna Matteo.
